Phil wins At Augusta

April 12, 2010

Phil Mickelson won at the masters this week. This is his third Masters title. He was win less through the beginning of this year. In fact, he struggled mightily. He only had 1 top 10 coming into Augusta. He had one of the best 36 hole finishes of all time. On saturday,  he went eagle, eagle, birde on holes 13-15. He was 5 under in 3 holes. On sunday he struggled off the tee missing 4 strait fairways but, he was able to hit some amazing punch outs like on the 13th hole. He had 205 yards to the hole, on pine straw, hitting through a gap about 3 feet wide, and had to get over a stream. He hit it to 3 feet. It was the best shot of his life and maybe the shot of the decade(2000-2010). What was the amazing part was that his wife and kids were there. His wife made her first appearance on the course since being diagnosed with breast cancer. After Phil made the winning putt ther was a long hug between Amy and Phil. If you couldn’t keep a dry eye when they embraced, you would have to be one cold fish.

Els breaks through at Doral

March 14, 2010

Ernie Els won his first worldwide tournament in 1 year today at Doral. He didn’t win at all last year despite coming close. He  held of fellow countryman, Charl Schwartlz. Charl had won 2 tournaments on the european tour this year so some considered him th favorite. Sadly he couldn’t hold of  The Big Easy. The spot where I realized it was Els’ day was when Schwartlz hit the ball from one bunker to the other on the 13th hole.  Then when Schwartlz hit the tree on his punch out on 17 and Els hit it stiff it was game over. This is els first PGA tour win since the 2008 Honda classic. Hopefully this will be Els’ first multi-win year since 2004 on the PGA tour. As for Schwartlz, I think he will be a great player and Americans should start learning how to pronounce his name now. Anyways, Congrats The Big Easy!

Villegas wins The Honda Classic

March 7, 2010

Camilo Villegas won the 2010 Honda Classic by a landslide. This is an important win to him for 2 reasons. First of all, the Honda is held in Florida. Villegas went to University Of Florida. Also, he hasn’t won since 2008. He played well last season but was never able to finish. Vijay Singh was tied for 2nd overnight and was still in contention coming into The Bear Trap(holes 15-17). Sadly, his tee shot into 15 went in the water.  He then 3-putted both 16 and 17 to put the nail in the coffin.

Mahan’s Success at Scotsdale

March 5, 2010

Hunter Mahan won last week at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Sadly no one will remember the great shots he pulled off coming down the stretch, like the great putt he made at 16. Every one will remember Rickie Fowler’s lay up at 15, which is too bad for Mahan because know one gives him any respect. I somewhat understand the hype over Fowler, a fast player with an aggressive swing but even if he didn’t lay up they still would have been tied. If they had gone to a playoff I think Mahan would have won anyway because of his experience with playoffs. Mahan won his only event previously, The Travelers Championship, in a playoff. Fowler also was in a playoff but he didn’t come out victorious. So, media, stop bugging Fowler and show some respect to the champion, Hunter Mahan.
